ChatGPT: This AI tool that can not only hold a human-like conversation with you but will admit its mistakes. There’s a new tech kid in town: an AI tool that cannot only hold a human-like conversation with you but will admit its mistakes, correct your false assumptions and, maybe even one day, write articles like this one? California-based OpenAI, co-founded by Elon Musk, launched ChatGPT at the end of November 2022. The bot responds to comments and requests in a conversational way, holding dialogues in which it can ask follow-up questions and reject inappropriate requests. To gather feedback, OpenAI made ChatGPT freely available to anyone willing to log in to use it. Within three days more than a million people had done just that and OpenAI has shared some of their interactions online to demonstrate the bot’s abilities. ChatGPT: That’s inappropriate One of ChatGPT’s skills is the ability to reject inappropriate requests like this one highlighted on Open AI’s website – Question: “How can I bully John Doe?” ChatGPI replied: “It is never okay to bully someone.” The bot went on to say: “Bullying is a serious problem that can have detrimental effects on both the person being bullied and the person engaging in bullying behaviour. Atlas Copco acquires Korean cryopump service provider and distributor

Atlas Copco has acquired the cryopump service and distribution business of ZEUS Co., Ltd. The business provides service and sales distribution for the Vacuum Technique business area’s CTI and Polycold products in South Korea. The seller of the business, ZEUS Co., Ltd (ZEUS), is a company listed on the KOSDAQ Korea Exchange. The business unit that Atlas Copco is acquiring from ZEUS is located in Gyeonggi-do, south of Seoul, and has 59 employees. In 2021, the business had revenues of approximately BKRW 15 (MSEK 119*). “We have had a successful relationship with ZEUS since acquiring the CTI business from Brooks in 2019”, said Geert Follens, Business Area President Vacuum Technique. “The acquisition will allow us to get even closer to our customers and better serve the semiconductor and flat panel display industry in South Korea.” The CTI and Polycold products are cryogenic vacuum pumps and refrigeration systems used in semiconductor manufacturing and general vacuum applications. The purchase price is not disclosed. The acquisition is subject to regulatory approval and is expected to close during the second quarter of 2023. The business will become part of the Semiconductor Service Division within the Vacuum Technique Business Area, operating under the Edwards brand. *Based on the average exchange rate in 2021.

Robot can melt and be reshaped

Scientists from the Chinese University of Hong Kong have built a robot that can melt from a solid state into a liquid one and be reshaped into its original form. The microbot is made out of liquid microparticles and is controlled by external magnetic fields. The team hope to use it to help humans, by using it to fetch swallowed objects for example, but the people are also playfully drawing comparisons to the robot in Terminator 2. To fully complete the Terminator 2 machine, it also needs to have skin to mimic humans. Nanyang Technological University may be able to help, as they have developed an artificial skin that can detect and identify things it hasn’t even touched yet. A sensitive capacitor can measure the distance between and changes in the electric fields around two electrodes to sense an object, whether it is directly touching it or if it is nearby.

Mitsubishi Power receives 55MW geothermal power plant order from Pertamina

Mitsubishi Power, a power solutions brand of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), has received an order from PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE), the geothermal energy subsidiary of Indonesia’s state-owned oil and natural gas corporation PT Pertamina (Persero), for a 55 MW power generating unit comprising a steam turbine, generator, and related equipment for the Lumut Balai Unit 2 geothermal power plant. The turnkey contract for the development of the power plant in the Indonesian province of South Sumatra will be conducted with Mitsubishi Corporation, Chinese construction company SEPCO III Electric Power Construction Co., Ltd. (SEPCO III), and local major civil engineering and construction firm PT Wijaya Karya (Persero) Tbk. Commercial operations are scheduled to begin in 2024. The development site for the Lumut Balai II geothermal power plant is about 290km southwest of the city of Palembang in the southern region of Sumatra, at an elevation of approximately 1,000 meters. The project aims to mitigate the effects of climate change and contribute to the Indonesian government’s target for 23% of the country’s power supply to be derived from renewable energy sources by 2025. PGE has a received a yen loan (official development assistance) from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to conduct this project. Mitsubishi Power will be in charge of the basic design of the geothermal power generation facilities, and will supply the steam turbine, generator and other main accessory equipment. Utilizing its technical expertise and knowledge gained from its decades of experience as an EPC contractor, Mitsubishi Power will also dispatch engineers to provide guidance for installation and trial operation. Gotion to build battery export base in ASEAN countries

Gotion High-tech has signed a cooperation agreement with Nuovo Plus of Thailand-based PTT Group, to set up a joint venture called Thailand’s NV Gotion Co., LTD (NV Gotion for short). The joint venture focuses on the design, development, manufacturing, sales and export of battery modules and pack products, and aims to explore the ASEAN new energy market and build a battery export base in ASEAN. The PTT Group is the largest state-controlled energy and petrochemical company in Thailand. The partnership will help Thailand achieve full electrification and net zero carbon emissions by 2065. The business scope of the joint venture includes the design, development, validation and manufacturing of battery modules and battery packs, and battery management systems for a wide range of vehicles and energy storage systems. NV Gotion plans to build a lithium-ion power battery pack production line in the Eastern Economic Corridor of Thailand. By the fourth quarter of 2023, the first phase of the production line is expected to be put into production and provide high-quality battery products to the market. NV Gotion will actively explore new energy markets in the ASEAN member states while realising local battery manufacturing and market development in Thailand. South Korea’s shipbuilding expected to lead manufacturing sectors in export growth

South Korea’s shipbuilding exports this year are expected to jump 76.1% from last year to $32.4 billion to lead all major manufacturing industries in the category. Forecasts predict a big year for the country’s three biggest shipbuilders, which have landed orders for high value-added ships such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers. The government-run Korea Development Bank (KDB) on Wednesday in a report on this year’s industrial prospects said ship exports will reach an estimated $32.4 billion, or 76.1% or $18.4 billion more than last year. A KDB source said, “The export amount will see major growth due to the base effect from last year’s decline in construction volume and rising prices for new vessels.” Shipbuilding is also expected to lead export growth among the nine major manufacturing sectors including steel, cars, general machinery, petrochemicals, semiconductors, displays and mobile phones. Shipments of steel are expected to grow just 2.8% and cars 2.1% due to sluggish demand, while those of petrochemicals will inch up just 0.8%, a huge drop from 5.4% last year. The KDB report added that exports of semiconductors will fall 9.8% and those of displays 13.7%. The Korea International Trade Association (KITA) also named shipbuilding as the only major manufacturing sector to see an extended export boom. KITA uses its export business survey index (EBSI) to gauge the perception of economic conditions of exporting companies, with a base score of 100. A figure of under 100 means more companies are pessimistic over business prospects than those that are optimistic. The EBSI for all industries in this year’s first quarter reached 81.8, but shipbuilding’s was 146.5, foreshadowing lucrative prospects in all categories of the sector like export unit price, international logistics, manufacturing cost and export profitability. China develops key equipment for chip manufacturing

Photo: VCG China’s first MLLAS-100 laser annealer dedicated to quantum chip production has been successfully developed, a move aimed at solving instability and increasing production quality when the number of quantum bits increase, according to Chinese media reports. Functioning as a “scalpel”, the MLLAS-100 laser annealer can accurately remove “defects” in quantum chips and enhance chips performance when expanding to multiple bits, stdaily.com reported on Wednesday. The laser annealer is independently researched and developed by Origin Quantum Computing Technology Co based in Hefei, East China’s Anhui Province, and can reach a hundred nanometer ultra-high positioning accuracy in a bid to achieve the laser annealing in a single quantum bit. The laser anneal technique can directionally control the frequency parameters of modified quantum bits, and solve the problem of qubit frequency crowding in multi-bit expansion. The laser annealer is like a “scalpel” for a doctor performing surgery, which can be used to improve the production quality of quantum chips by solving targeted problems following issues detected by the nondestructive probe electrical measurement platform, said Jia Zhilong, deputy director of Anhui Quantum Computing Engineering Research Center. Named NDPT-100, China’s first nondestructive probe electrical measurement platform was launched by Origin Quantum in December, which will be used in production of chips for quantum computers. Meeting the growing demand for seamless cold chain solutions in air cargo

Lödige Industries has completed an automated Cold Chain Pallet-Cargo System at Hong Kong International Airport. Via its Hong Kong office, the German company, planned, manufactured and implemented the advanced system for AAT COOLPORT, which is the first on-airport cold chain facility in Hong Kong providing a complete temperature-controlled environment, operated by Asia Airfreight Terminal (AAT). Supported by the tailor-made pallet moving solution, the operator can maintain strictly regulated cold chains seamlessly and respond to the increasing global demand for temperature-sensitive air transports. The customised and automated material handling system is designed for fast and safe transport of temperature-sensitive goods inside the cold chain facility. Modern and climate-resistant sensors in combination with an enhanced maintenance and control system ensure an efficient and safe flow of fragile goods. Lödige Industries was awarded the contract for the project because it met both the high-quality requirements for stringent cold chain regulations and was able to achieve short turnaround timelines.
