The Interview: Sojung Lee,TeamViewer, APAC President

How is your company finding current business conditions?

As the industry progressively adjusts to post-pandemic life, we are optimistic that the rapid digitalisation of the past three years will continue to impact businesses and their need for remote connectivity solutions.

During the pandemic, companies experienced the benefits of remote access to IT and OT devices, reducing travel and resulting in increased efficiency and cost reduction. On top of it, the Industrial Metaverse, facilitated by augmented- and mixed reality, has gained momentum.

Already today, but even more in future, frontline workers will be supported by digital tools running on wearables such as smart glasses, to make their jobs smarter, easier, and increase their productivity. We are looking forward to continuously support our customers with our solutions for remote access, IT support and workplace digitalisation for frontline workers.

Where do you see potential areas of growth?

We see a lot of growth opportunities in the APAC region. Recently, we have opened regional headquarters in Singapore and Korea which emphasises our ambition in these markets.

In Korea, for instance, we can report great developments. We are partnering up with Hyundai Motor Company and will provide them with our industry-leading enterprise augmented reality platform and artificial intelligence capabilities. We will help Hyundai Motor to develop an intelligent manufacturing platform and enhance productivity, accuracy and worker safety in a smart factory.

How is 2023 shaping up for your company?

We are certain that our solutions are highly relevant for customers as they help them to manage remote operations securely, increase efficiency and sustainability as well as overcome labour shortage. Especially in APAC, we see an acceleration of our business and we are positive that this will continue in 2023.

Areas for development?

In 2023, we will continue our journey to become a more enterprise-focused software provider, leveraging our large customer base and our partnerships to win new business and grow.

How do you attract the right staff and are there suitable people in the marketplace?

Our business is all about innovation. We are a market leader in remote connectivity solutions. But we are also one of the leaders when it comes to the implementation of the Industrial Metaverse—a technology that is expected to shape the future of the business industry—including particular sections such as manufacturing, automotive, field service, and retail.

By working on innovative and disruptive topics, we are putting ourselves in a position that is attracting young, driven professionals.

Tell us about you: What drives you to succeed?

What drives me to succeed is the idea of building a cohesive team with a shared goal and ambition. When individuals with unique strengths come together, their combined efforts can lead to a synergistic outcome that far exceeds their individual capabilities.

That is why I take time and effort to build strong, collaborative teams that can scale and grow together.

Do you experience the in-balance of the sexes in the workplace?

There is definitely still a long way to go when it comes to gender-parity, especially in the IT sector. I am fortunate to be part of the Senior Leadership Team of a company that recognises the importance of diversity and is constantly striving to be more inclusive. As a company with a workforce comprised of people from over 70 countries, diversity is one of our core values.

That’s why we set the goal to have at least 33% of women in management positions. For our complete management team, starting at middle management, we already achieved our goal: at the end of 2021, women made up 36% of management positions within TeamViewer—which is above the tech industry average of 32% in the Southeast Asian region according to the BCG study of Southeast Asia’s workforce.

We are striving to achieve this for our Management and Supervisory Board as well at the end of 2023. Because as the BCG study also shows, companies with more women in their workforces and leadership teams perform better.

Do you have tips from your career you want to share?

  • Taking the Initiative: I firmly believe that growth and learning come from taking on challenges. Throughout my career, I have sought out opportunities to step out of my comfort zone and tackle new initiatives. These experiences have pushed me to think creatively and outside the box.
  • Scaling through teamwork and partnerships: I also believe that solving bigger problems requires strong partnerships and teamwork. I have dedicated time and energy to building meaningful relationships with my partners and colleagues, focusing on trust and mutual respect.
  • A commitment to growth and development: Ongoing learning and development are essential for growth. That’s why I have implemented regular learning programs like a “Lunch and Learn”-series, bringing together leaders, talent, mentors, and team members to engage, learn, and grow together.
  • Do you have words of encouragement for young women of today?
  • Embrace ambition: I encourage young women to seize opportunities, step out of their comfort zones, and tackle new challenges. This will help them to be innovative, learn new things, and grow as individuals.
  • Communication is key: Effective communication is essential for success, both in the workplace and in life. I firmly believe young women should invest in their communication skills and share their successes and challenges transparently. By breaking down silos and encouraging open and honest communication, women can build stronger relationships and achieve more together.
