Hyundai Motor Group to develop advanced manufacturing facility of the future with 5G

Singtel in agreement with Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) will deploy Singtel’s 5G infrastructure network solutions at its Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Centre in Singapore (HMGICS) which includes an electric vehicle production facility. The HMGICS, the first of its kind in the world, will leverage Singtel’s leading-edge 5G campus network with mobile edge core solutions that will provide uninterrupted high-speed connectivity and massive bandwidth to enhanceHMGICS’s high-precision quality control in manufacturing operations. HMGICS is the HMG’s open innovation hub for research and development in advanced mobility ecosystems with the aim of revolutionising the future mobility value chain. Apart from introducing smart mobility solutions in areas such as electric vehicles (EV), autonomous vehicles, and new forms of mobility products and services in Singapore, the HMGICS will also serve as a testbed for human-centred intelligent manufacturing and verification of Industry 4.0 technologies. MVDE achieves production of 200,000 small diesel engines

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries-VST Diesel Engines Pvt. Ltd. (MVDE)*, has achieved a cumulative production of 200,000 units of industrial-use, small diesel engines. This achievement was made possible by the acknowledgement of the engine’s durability in harsh environments and the manufacturing quality originated in Japan, as well as the high demand for engines to be used in industrial applications including agricultural equipment and generators. MVDE is a subsidiary of MHIET, established in 2007 as a joint venture with V.S.T. Tillers Tractors Ltd. (VTTL), a local agricultural machinery manufacturer. MHIET holds a 96.8% stake in the company, and VTTL 3.2%. MVDE’s diesel engines are trusted by OEMs of agricultural machines, generators and other equipment around the world and reached a cumulative production total of 100,000 units in 2018. OEMs in India have been focusing not only on the domestic market, but also Europe and other markets, resulting in a steady increase in the sales of MVDE engines. Taking advantage of the momentum from reaching this milestone, MHIET and MVDE strengthen the sales, procurement, manufacturing and aftersales service further to respond to the growing demand in the Indian market and other markets by utilising its global network.

UPM Raflatac launches world’s first certified label material to fight ocean bound plastic pollution

Kuala Lumpur– UPM Raflatac has launched Ocean Action labels, the world’s first label made from Ocean Bound Plastics (OBP) sourced predominately from Malaysia using a mass balance approach. Mass balancing means enabling the gradual shift to a sustainable economy by allowing fossil and virgin materials to be replaced with sustainable ones, like recycled plastics waste. The new innovative label material is made possible through a collaboration with multiple partners including Malaysia’s Heng Hiap Industries (HHI), Saudi Basic Industries Corp (SABIC) and Taghleef Industries. UPM Raflatac is a global producer of labelling materials from Finland. In Malaysia, it has a manufacturing plant in Pasir Gudang, Johor. UPM Raflatac is leading in sustainable labelling through its innovative self-adhesive label materials and services. The Ocean Action label material is available as white and clear top-coated polypropylene (PP) films. Complete with Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified glassine and post-consumer recycled content (PET PCR) liners, it is a robust sustainable solution. These label materials are a perfect fit for fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), such as household goods, personal care, packaged foods, and beverages. Ocean bound plastic is abandoned plastic waste recovered from areas up to 50km inland from waterways, defined as “at risk of ending up in the ocean” by Ocean Bound Plastic Certification (OBPCert) under the Zero Plastics Oceans NGO. According to World Wildlife Fund (WWF), 60% of the estimated 8 million tonnes of plastic that enter the world’s oceans each year is contributed by China, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. Malaysia ranked highest among the six countries analysed in terms of annual per-capita plastic packaging consumption, at about 16.8 kg per person. Asia-Pacific most receptive to smart manufacturing usage globally

Companies believe smart manufacturing is key to their business’ future success, The State of Smart Manufacturing Report reveals. Plex Systems, a Rockwell Automation company in cloud-delivered smart manufacturing solutions, has announced the results of its 7th annual study, “The State of Smart Manufacturing Report.” The research reveals that smart manufacturing adoption accelerated by 50% globally in 2021, and these new technologies are now solving the industry’s critical challenges. Asia-Pacific (APAC) organisations (93%) view smart manufacturing as “very” or “extremely” important to future success, compared to North America (NA) (84%) and Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) (75%). Reflecting their optimistic attitude towards smart manufacturing, most APAC companies reported a shorter timeframe – “within the next 7 to 11 months” – for adoption of smart manufacturing solutions, compared with NA and EMEA’s majority response of “within the next 1-2 years”. The global study surveyed more than 300 manufacturers in a variety of industries including automotive, aerospace, food and beverage, electronics, consumer goods, plastics and rubber, precision metal forming, and more. This year’s report, conducted in collaboration with Hanover Research, offers valuable insights into trends, challenges, and future plans for global manufacturers. The report aims to help manufacturers benchmark their technology strategy and incorporate smart manufacturing best practices to stay competitive and thrive. A scalable technology strategy makes it possible to incrementally adopt solutions and achieve value quickly. As manufacturers look to streamline processes and solve today’s challenges, they are placing significant value on using smart technology to address and improve actual business outcomes. Global systems makers accelerate adoption of Grace and Grace Hopper

Singtel to deploy 5G millimetre wave solutions

Singtel has been appointed by semiconductor giant Micron Technology to deploy its 5G millimetre wave (mmWave) solutions with localised edge core at the semiconductor manufacturer’s largest 3D NAND flash memory fabrication plant in Singapore, in a first for Singapore and the semiconductor manufacturing sector. This commercial deployment is the first time Micron is exploring 5G for Industry 4.0 semiconductor manufacturing – making it the first company in Singapore to deploy mmWave campus solution plus edge core on-premises and operationalise 5G at scale. Micron will also be leveraging Singtel’s Paragon, the industry’s first all-in-one platform for 5G network, edge computing and services orchestration, to conduct real time performance monitoring and feedback. Singtel’s 5G mmWave solutions will be used at Micron’s cleanroom to support the development of a variety of digitally enabled and enhanced applications from automated visual inspections of individual chips to augmented reality (AR) for operations and maintenance. The rollout follows successful trials using Singtel’s GENIE – the world’s first portable 5G-in-a-box platform, which helped validate the mmWave solution, verify its performance and demonstrate the operational benefits of Singtel’s 5G solutions in Micron’s next generation cleanroom.

King Steel rolls out proprietary mechatronic technology MICS

King Steel Machinery Co., Ltd (King Steel), a worldwide full service steel supplier with a long-term commitment to injection molding machines with multiple injectors and multiple tool workstations, has developed a multiple injectors and mold clamps system (MICS). This is a mechatronic system that can be equipped with four injector sets and is used flexibly to produce double/single-color finished products with linear, disc or mould configuration, reducing costs by 15 per cent to 20 per cent. By increasing the number of injector sets for double-color offerings from two to four, King Steel has significantly enhanced the production capacity of such machines by 70 per cent, with an equipment utilisation of up to 95 per cent. By doing so, the company has become a leader in the footwear machinery sector. “Machines that were developed based on MICS have helped customers improve efficiency and costs”, said Chang Chia-ling, director of marketing at King Steel. Use of Siemens’ digital twin software NX-MCD (an integrated cyber-physical system) has increased R&D efficiency while lowering development costs. King Steel has applied for some 100 international patents across 17 categories for its proprietary machinery in a move to protect the firm’s intellectual property as well as the rights and interests of customers and brands. MICS technology has been widely applied across various injection processes and sectors, including sports goods (sneakers, yoga bars, non-inflatable footballs, bike gadgets and accessories), healthcare products, protective gear as well as toys for children and pets, in addition to electronics and packaging materials. Through the application of MICS, the company aims to maximise output with minimum investment by assisting a wide range of sectors in increasing production capacity and achieving environmental benefits from energy savings and carbon reduction.
