Gotion to build battery export base in ASEAN countries

Gotion High-tech has signed a cooperation agreement with Nuovo Plus of Thailand-based PTT Group, to set up a joint venture called Thailand’s NV Gotion Co., LTD (NV Gotion for short). The joint venture focuses on the design, development, manufacturing, sales and export of battery modules and pack products, and aims to explore the ASEAN new energy market and build a battery export base in ASEAN. The PTT Group is the largest state-controlled energy and petrochemical company in Thailand. The partnership will help Thailand achieve full electrification and net zero carbon emissions by 2065. The business scope of the joint venture includes the design, development, validation and manufacturing of battery modules and battery packs, and battery management systems for a wide range of vehicles and energy storage systems. NV Gotion plans to build a lithium-ion power battery pack production line in the Eastern Economic Corridor of Thailand. By the fourth quarter of 2023, the first phase of the production line is expected to be put into production and provide high-quality battery products to the market. NV Gotion will actively explore new energy markets in the ASEAN member states while realising local battery manufacturing and market development in Thailand. It is committed to building the battery export base in ASEAN. PTT Group, a Fortune 500 company, is Thailand’s largest state-controlled energy and petrochemical company. 20 MW Taungdaw Gwin build-own-operate solar plant opens in Myanmar

Myanmar’s latest solar energy plant, the 20 megawatt (MW) build-own-operate (BOO) Taungdaw Gwin project adds a new chapter to the country’s sustainability and electrification efforts. The 20-megawatt Taungdaw Gwin mega-scale solar PV project will contribute to Myanmar’s sustainability and electrification efforts. [Image: GPE] The project was developed by Green Power Energy Company Limited (GPE), a subsidiary of Gold Energy Company Limited (GE), a leading renewable energy developer in Myanmar. Taungdaw Gwin is the second mega-scale solar project to be completed by the GE group. Clean Power Energy Limited, another GE subsidiary, completed the 30 MW Thapyay Wa project in Mandalay district in December 2021. With the official opening of the Taungdaw Gwin project, GE’s solar energy capacity stands at 50 MW. GE also operates the 120 MW Thaukyegat (2) Hydropower Project (TYG), commissioned in 2013. Located on an 80.9-hectare site southeast of Kyaukse, Myit Thar Township, the Taungdaw Gwin project utilizes a solar tracking system so as to maximize photovoltaic (PV) energy captured by 45,980 solar panels. The project is expected to generate 25.1 MW of direct current or 22.9 MW of alternating current per year. The Taungdaw Gwin project began transmission to the National Grid on 17 November 2022. The energy output is directly linked to the Taungdaw Gwin substation and is connected to the national grid via a 69.6 km 33-kV transmission line built by GPE. MHI and EGAT cooperate on clean power generation in Thailand

TOKYO – Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) and Thailand’s largest power producer Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to study and exchange information relating to clean power generation, hydrogen, carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) technologies in support of the nation’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Solar testing lab opens in Shanghai

DEKRA recently inaugurated a new testing center for renewable energy in Shanghai, China. With this step, the global expert organisation is meeting the growing demand from the Chinese solar industry for high-quality testing and certification services. The DEKRA Shanghai Renewable Energy Testing Center is its biggest and most state-of-the-art solar laboratory to date in Baoshan, Shanghai, with the aim of providing even greater support to the development of the solar industry. Atlas Copco to acquire Chinese manufacturer of liquid ring pumps and systems

Atlas Copco has agreed to acquire the assets of Shandong Bozhong Vacuum Technology Co., Ltd, a company that develops and manufactures liquid ring vacuum pumps and systems. Shandong Bozhong Vacuum Technology was founded in 2002 and is located in Zhangdian District, Zibo, Shandong province, China. In 2021, they had revenues of approximately 90 MCNY (120 MSEK*). The company has 116 employees, and a broad customer base in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries in China as well as globally. “Shandong Bozhong Vacuum Technology is an experienced manufacturing and machining company,” said Geert Follens, Business Area President Vacuum Technique. “This acquisition adds a company with good reputation for their high-quality standards and aligns with our local-for-local strategy.” The acquisition is expected to close in Q1, 2023. The purchase price is not disclosed. The acquired business will become part of the Industrial Vacuum Division within the Vacuum Technique Business Area.

Mitsubishi Corp signs agreement for carbon sequestration

Mitsubishi Corporation has signed a participation agreement with Sempra Infrastructure, TotalEnergies and Mitsui & Co., Ltd. for the development of the proposed Hackberry Carbon Sequestration (HCS) project at the site in Southwest Louisiana. The project aims to capture, transport and sequestrate carbon dioxide (CO2), primary sourced from Cameron LNG, and the participation agreement provides the basis for the parties to potentially enter into a joint venture with Sempra Infrastructure for the HCS project. Last summer, the Hackberry Carbon Sequestration, LLC, which is owned by Sempra Infrastructure, filed an application for a Class VI injection well permit from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for permanent storage of up to 2 million tonnes per annum of CO2. As underpinned in both Roadmap to a Carbon Neutral Society and Midterm Corporate Strategy 2024, announced in October 2021 and May 2022 respectively, MC is placing greater emphasis on energy transformations (EX). By lowering the carbon footprint throughout the LNG value chain through CCS and other EX initiatives, MC hopes to spearhead future transformations and help societies to decarbonise by providing a stable supply of clean energies. “We are thrilled to participate in a business opportunity that could potentially lower the carbon intensity of LNG produced from the Cameron LNG Project, through which we will be able to provide additional value to our customers,” said Masaru Saito, Senior Vice President and Division COO, North America Div., Mitsubishi Corporation. “CCS promises to play an important role in achieving net-zero emissions on a global scale, so we are excited about making this project happen and looking forward to expanding our CCS business portfolio.” The development of the HCS project is subject to risks and uncertainties, including signing definitive agreements, securing all necessary permits, and reaching a final investment decision.

Singtel to deploy 5G millimetre wave solutions

Singtel has been appointed by semiconductor giant Micron Technology to deploy its 5G millimetre wave (mmWave) solutions with localised edge core at the semiconductor manufacturer’s largest 3D NAND flash memory fabrication plant in Singapore, in a first for Singapore and the semiconductor manufacturing sector. This commercial deployment is the first time Micron is exploring 5G for Industry 4.0 semiconductor manufacturing – making it the first company in Singapore to deploy mmWave campus solution plus edge core on-premises and operationalise 5G at scale. Micron will also be leveraging Singtel’s Paragon, the industry’s first all-in-one platform for 5G network, edge computing and services orchestration, to conduct real time performance monitoring and feedback. Singtel’s 5G mmWave solutions will be used at Micron’s cleanroom to support the development of a variety of digitally enabled and enhanced applications from automated visual inspections of individual chips to augmented reality (AR) for operations and maintenance. The rollout follows successful trials using Singtel’s GENIE – the world’s first portable 5G-in-a-box platform, which helped validate the mmWave solution, verify its performance and demonstrate the operational benefits of Singtel’s 5G solutions in Micron’s next generation cleanroom.

Baseload Capital completes third power plant in Japan

Baseload Capital is pleased to announce that its subsidiary, Baseload Power Japan, has completed a third geothermal power plant. Developed in partnership with Furusato Power generation and the Sansui hot spring inn, Sansui Geothermal Power Plant will produce 350 MWh annually, equivalent to the annual power consumption of roughly 100 households. The electricity generated by the new plant will be sold to Kyushu Electric Power through a feed-in tariff (FIT) mechanism. The surplus of hot water will be provided to the Sansui hot spring inn to be used as bathing water for its hot spring operations. “The Japanese government has committed to carbon neutrality by 2050 and expanding the use of renewable energy is critical to achieving that goal”, said Ryuta Hiratsuka, Representative Director of Baseload Power Japan KK. “Geothermal power generation, which can be sourced and consumed locally, will become an important part of the country’s energy mix.” While Japan is estimated to have the third largest geothermal resources after the United States and Indonesia, the ratio of geothermal power generation in the county stands at a mere 0.2%. “Geothermal energy can help invigorate local areas”, said Furusato Power generation Co., Ltd. Vietnam to stop use of coal

Vietnam will phase out the use of coal by 2040. So the country will cease to build new coal plants. However, ‘heavy-hitting countries China, India and Australia have made no such commitment. This decision in accordance with the climate conference will provide a major boost for citizens in health and environmental issues. Planetary concerns as well show this as also a contribution to helping to improve the perilous state of the planet. There is a need to limit the rise in the average global temperature to 1.5 degree Celsius 2.7 Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial levels achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. In 2019, coal produced around 37% of the world’s electricity. Cheap, abundant and local supplies mean the fuel dominates power production in countries including India, Poland and South Africa, which will require huge investments to shift their industries and energy sectors to cleaner sources.

TAE Technologies partners with Japan’s Institute of Fusion Science

TAE Technologies, the world’s largest private fusion energy company, has announced a landmark partnership with Japan’s National Institute of Fusion Science (NIFS) that enables the two organisations to test the effects of hydrogen-boron (p-B11) fusion reactions in the NIFS Large Helical Device (LHD). The results of this research have the potential to unlock a new milestone in TAE’s mission to develop commercial fusion power with p-B11, the cleanest and most affordable fuel for fusion cycles. Fusion is the process of combining elements to release large amounts of energy. It is a carbon-free, baseload energy solution to address both climate change and the growing global energy demand. Most fusion efforts around the world are focused on combining hydrogen isotopes deuterium-tritium (D-T) to use as fuel; the donut-shaped tokamak machines commonly used in fusion concepts are limited to D-T fuel. In contrast, TAE’s compact linear design uses an advanced beam-driven field-reversed configuration (FRC) that can accommodate all available fusion fuel cycles, including D-T and deuterium-helium-3 (D-He-3), a benefit that uniquely enables the company to license its technology on the way to its ultimate goal of connecting the first p-B11 fusion power plant to the grid by the end of this decade. TAE is developing commercial fusion power plants using p-B11 because it is the most economical and environmentally friendly fuel cycle for fusion. P-B11 eliminates the need for breeding tritium, thus offering cleaner, safer operations while maximising the durability and lifetime of the fusion plant. The boron in p-B11 is ubiquitous in nature, found in vast deposits in the earth’s crust and sea water, and is used in detergents and other industrial commodities.
